Many of the problems listed above can be the result of our individual backgrounds and how we have been brought-up. We might live with issues throughout our lives that actually originated in our early years, but do not understand how we relate in the world has been impacted by this. I have a Post-Graduate Certificate in Attachment-based therapy, so will work with clients, if it is something they would like to do, to explore and understand their backgrounds and how it is possible to live in a different way in the future.
I have also worked for many years in the field of addiction, working with clients suffering from a range of addictions, including drugs, alcohol, eating (anorexia nervosa, bulimia, over-eating and binge eating), gambling and sex addictions. I believe that people struggling with addiction problems use chemicals or behaviours to 'self-medicate' emotional pain. This could come from previous experiences, or as a result of the difficulties and stress inherent in everyday life. My approach is to work with clients in the 'here and now', to help them to maintain abstinence and to prevent relapse, using primarily a CBT approach.
In addition, I offer support to the partners/spouses, children or other family members of clients with addictive disorders, as it can be confusing, frustrating and sometimes terrifying trying to cope with the chaos that surrounds the life of the addict. Most commonly, the loved ones of the person with the addiction feel helpless, angry and at a complete loss as to what to do.
I also worked in a bereavement and loss agency for four years, with clients who have lost someone close to them; who have experienced a suicide in the family; who have suffered sudden trauma and clients who have been diagnosed with serious illness and have been told they have limited years left to live
Whatever a psychotherapist's training background, this will always be central to helping a client to change. The result for the client entering into therapy, is a place and time in life like no other, which gives them the space to focus on themselves, on what they are struggling with and to find clarity and resolution to enable them to be able to live more fulfilled lives in the future.
